Nepal to host beauty pageant for transgender women

KATHMANDU, May 12: A beauty pageant is to be held among transgender women in Nepal.


At a press conference in the capital on Saturday, a member of Blue Diamond Society (BDS), Simran Sherchan, shared that a competition is going to be held on May 16 to enhance the capacity of sexual and gender minority women.

The beauty pageant is being held to mark the International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT), which is observed on May 17 at the call of the World Health Organization. This year, the day is being celebrated with the slogan ‘No one left behind: equality, freedom and justice for all.’


The event is being held at the Rastriya Naachghar in Kathmandu. A total of 19 people will be competing for the first prize including Rs 100,000 in cash. The first runner-up will be given Rs 75,000 and the second runner-up will be given a certificate along with a cash prize. 


According to Sherchan, the winner of the competition will be selected to participate in the transgender beauty pageant to be held in Bangkok, Thailand. 


The contestants have also undergone a 15-days training on capacity building and personality development.
