Aviation sector, mountaineering likely to see impact of Westerly wind

KATHMANDU, Feb 2: Currently, the country witnesses a partial impact of the Westerly wind. The Meteorological Forecasting Division says the Westerly wind that is entering from western Nepal tonight is likely to trigger light to moderate thundershowers and snowfall for the next three days. 

This atmospheric condition may have its implications on the aviation sector, mountaineering, agriculture, transport and people’s daily life. Due to the weather change, cold is likely to rise and the Division has urged all to take precautionary measures against it.  

Tonight, the weather will be partly to generally cloudy in Province 1, Bagmati Province, Gandaki Province and Lumbini Province and generally to mostly cloudy in Karnali Province and Sudurpaschim Province and mainly fair in Madesh Province. Light rain is likely to occur at some places of Karnali Province and Sudurpaschim Province. There is a possibility of light snowfall at some places of the high hilly and mountainous regions.

On Thursday, it will be generally to be fully cloudy in Sudurpaschim Province, Karnali Province, Lumbini Province and Gandaki Province while Bagmati Province, Madhes Province and Province 1 will see partial to generally cloudy conditions. There are chances of light snowfall at high-hills and at a few places in the mountainous regions of Sudurpaschim, Karnali, Lumbini, and Gandaki provinces.

Similarly, there is a possibility of light snowfall at some places of highlands and mountainous regions of Bagmati Province and Province 1 while light to moderate thundershowers have been forecast at many places of the hilly and Terai regions. 

The weather will be generally to fully cloudy across the country on Friday and on Saturday. On Friday, the possibility remains for a light to moderate snowfall at a few places of the high hills and mountainous regions. 

The impact of the Westerly wind will continue on Saturday, too, and the weather is likely to improve from Sunday. 

Light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning is likely in many places of hilly and Terai regions and heavy rain has been forecast at some places of Gandaki and Lumbini provinces.

There is a possibility of light to moderate snowfall in Gandaki, Bagmati and some places in the high hills and mountains of Province 1 on Saturday, too. There are chances of light to moderate rainfall in many parts of the hills and Terai of these provinces. 

This harsh weather pattern will peter out from Sunday and the weather will improve gradually, the Division said.
