KATHMANDU, Nov 12: The Downing Center Local Court in Sydney has convicted an Australian citizen on child sex offences committed in Nepal in 2007 and slapped a minimum 15 months imprisonment, Australian Embassy said in a statement.

“The Australian government condemns in the strongest possible terms the vile crime of child sexual exploitation and takes all child sex allegations very seriously,” said the embassy in the statement. [break]

The case at hand, the embassy said, involved significant cooperation between the Australian Federal Police and Nepal police.

According to Australian laws, engagement in sexual activity with children below the age of 16 is crime.

“These offences have provisions applying an extended geographical jurisdiction that enables offences committed overseas to be investigated and prosecuted in Australia,” said the embassy in the statement.
