The driver, 20-year-old Melachi Brown, had the Volkswagen stopped north of the scene on I-695, police said, where it became disabled.

Police said Brown did not report any injuries.

UPDATE: The Maryland State Police tweeted that investigators believe a second vehicle involved in the crash. It is still an active investigation.

At least six people have been killed in a crash on the west side of the Baltimore Beltway, according to Maryland State Police.

The crash happened in a construction zone between Windsor Mill and Dogwood roads, according to Maryland State Police.

In a news release, investigators say a car entered the work zone between temporary jersey walls and hit multiple construction workers before flipping over.

The identities of the six people who died are being held pending next of kin, according to police. The identity of the driver of the car is not known at the time.

State Highway officials say they are changing the timing on the traffic lights surrounding the crash to help relieve traffic.

Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski issued a statement on Twitter, saying "On behalf of all the residents of Baltimore County, we offer our sincere condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones of those who have lost their lives in today's tragic crash and my prayers remain with those injured in this horrific incident."

Baltimore County Public Schools said that parents should be prepared for significant delays this afternoon because of the crash.
