Parliamentary committee or special committee should be formed to conduct investigation

KATHMANDU, July 31: CPN (Maoist Center) Deputy General Secretary Barshaman Pun has demanded the formation of a parliamentary/judicial committee, or special committee to investigate gold smuggling.

During the meeting of the leader of CPN (Maoist Center) held at the Prime Minister's residence in Baluwatar on Monday morning, Pun also clarified that he has nothing to do with the Belgian citizen Dawa Tsering, who was arrested on Sunday in the case of gold smuggling.

Pun stated that there was an attempt to associate his name with Dawa Tsering as a planned maneuver to divert and manipulate the campaign against corruption and irregularity conducted by the government.

Pun has given clarification that Amala Roka of the martyrs’ family, who is also a party cadre from his home district Thawang, Rolpa, is married to Dawa Tsering and Amala Roka once brought Tsering to Pun’s flat to get to know each other.

He said, "After Dawa Tsering's arrest, a group photo taken during a meeting eight years ago was connected with the current incident and circulated," Pun added, "This is an attack on my public image and character assassination."

Pun demanded a thorough investigation into the gold smuggling case, saying that some people have demanded the resignation of Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha and attempted to link the name of Vice Chairman of CPN (Maoist Center) Krishna Bahadur Mahara and Pun’s name to the case to implicate them.

He said that if he is found guilty in the investigation, he is ready to face any punishment and other leaders should also be ready for the punishment.

He demanded that an expert team, a parliamentary committee or a special committee should be formed to investigate all those who were named in the case.

Pun said, "We leaders, our relatives or those who are found to be involved in the crime should be punished, we must be ready to go to jail if found guilty.”

Pun also said that the trend of criminalization by the other party will not be tolerated if the name of a certain person or an organization is attached to any criminal activity whether within or outside the party.

Speaking in the meeting, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, who is also the Chairman of CPN (Maoist Center), responded that all cases of smuggling and corruption would be investigated impartially.

PM Dahal said that the Department of Revenue Investigation under his office and the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police are investigating the gold smuggling case, and he mentioned that the cooperation of all party leaders and workers and the common people is necessary to bring this campaign to an end.

He said that internal unity within the party should be strengthened to carry out the campaign against corruption and irregularities.
