"We have finalized candidates of presidents for over 17 colleges till late Sunday night," Ram Kumari Jhankri, chairperson of All Nepal National Free Student Union (ANNFSU), told myrepublica.com. "We have also formed election alliances with other student unions in several other colleges."
Candidates for other posts will be finalized by Monday evening, she said.
ANNFSU secretariat meeting on Sunday nominated Raj Kumar Rai for Ratna Rajya Campus, Kamal Basnet for Amrit Science College, Bishnu Hari Pandey for Minbhawan Campus, Rajan KC for Shankar Dev Campus, Anil Rijal for Mahendra Ratna Campus, Ramesh Poudel in Bishwobhasha Campus and Purushottam Kadariya in Tri Chandra College. Similarly, the secretariat has named Yogendra Bohora in Public Youth Campus, Asha Rai in Maharajgunj Nursing Campus, Shyam Sundar Basnet in Sanothimi Campus, Jhapendra Khatri in Patan Multiple Campus, Ambika Basnet in Padma Kanya Campus, Prithvi Khanal in Thapathali Engineering Campus and Prakash Sapkota in Pulchowk Engineering Campus for the election.
Rai, Pandey, Kadariya and Basnet are also Central Committee members of the UML student wing.
ANNFSU has formed an alliance with Nepali Congress´ student wing Nepal Students´ Union (NSU) in Public Administration Campus. It will support the NSU´s candidate for president in the campus. The two student organizations are also holding talks to make an alliance in all the colleges in the Lumbini zone. "Talks are underway in positive direction," she said.
The UML student wing on Sunday made an alliance also with Maoist student wing, All Nepal National Independent Student Union-Revolutionary, (ANNISU-R), in all the nine colleges in Chitwan district. As per the agreement, the Maoist student wing will support ANNFSU´s candidates for the president in five colleges in the district while the latter will reciprocate in four colleges in Chitwan.
The ANNFSU has also made an alliance with Nepal Revolutionary Student Union, the student body of Nepal Workers and Peasants´ Party, in Bhaktapur Multiple Campus. "We have also agreed to form an alliance of pro-left student organizations in Maharajgunj Medicine Campus," Jhankri said.
She said that the organization´s intention behind forming alliance with other organizations was to give a message to the people that the student communities want to adopt the politics of consensus and harmony.
Records in the past show colleges often turn into battlegrounds during the student elections due to frequent clashes among the student groups.
