Activists warn KMC of legal remedy for conservation of Kamalpokhari (With Video)

KATHMANDU, Jan 19: Activists staged a protest demonstration in front of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) Office at Sundhara, demanding the conservation of Kamalpokhari, a historical pond in Kathmandu.

The activists expressed their strong reservation against the ongoing restoration work using concrete and thus damaging the naturally and ecologically important wetland, the pond.

On Monday, at the initiative of the activists, the Department of Archaeology issued a letter to the KMC Office, asking it to carry out the construction work without damaging the pond’s natural and ecological state and use traditional construction materials and technology.

However, on the same night, KMC used bulldozers to extract soil from the pond, which could destroy its ecology. So, the activists reached the scene and stopped the action.

And on Tuesday, activists demonstrated in front of the KCM Office to pressurize it to work accordingly to save the significance of Kamalpokhari. They also warned of going to the court of law for a legal remedy if the construction is not done as per its original style without using cement or iron rods.
The work to renovate the pond started in June 2019.

My City interviewed one of the activists who talks about the demonstration and importance of Kamalpokhari.
