KATHMANDU, July 15: Nepali actor Rajesh Hamal has called on his fans and the general public to stop attacking people with insults and abusive comments on social media platforms. Hamal was indicating online trolls against Deepashree Niraula who has been dragged into a controversy over the issue of ‘Mahanayak’ – a term she says Hamal is not befitting of.

Uploading a video on Facebook on Tuesday, Hamal expressed his concerns over people violently pitching aggression over actress and director Deepashree Niraula regarding her comments about the actor in an interview. During an interview, she said that Hamal is not a Mahanayak, and that she did not have the courage and stature to say so before.

She was then harshly criticized by the general public, especially Hamal’s fans. People wrote that her statements were sham and offensive to Hamal and his contribution to the Nepali film industry.

Hamal’s video was uploaded on his Facebook page where he says that the Nepali cinema is caught in unnecessary and exaggerated controversy and disputes. He then went on to express his deep concerns over the matter, urging the public to ‘be kind’ and stop attacking people online with insults and abusive words.

Earlier, fellow artist Deepak Raj Giri had also spoken through his social media platforms, stating that he, too, is being tagged along in this controversy and is being criticized and attacked upon on social media. “We are being criticized and cyber bullied through fake social media accounts,” he said on Sunday evening.

In the midst of the Mahanayak debate, Hamal stepped up to ask his fans to evaluate their words before attacking other artists. “There’s no way we can progress if we keep attacking people with ruthless insults and abusive comments. Let us all be optimistic and kind to each other,” he said adding, “Only positive and constructive comments help the artists to move up in their career.”

Hamal concludes by saying that the Nepali cinema industry stands in support and strength provided by the viewers and general public, and every title he has received so far is due to his tolerance, perseverance and his fans’ love.
