PLA beat Central Region in volleyball<br/>Bikash in last 16 of National Open Badminton

KATHMANDU, Sept 9: The People´s Liberation Army (PLA) Sports Club had a hard-fought win over Central Region in women´s category on Wednesday in the ongoing National Women´s and Men´s League Volleyball Tournament held at the covered hall of the Dasharath Stadium. [break]



The PLA backed by two sets to one in the third set bounced back in the fourth and the fifth to capture the match. The PLA took the first set 27-25 but lost two consecutive sets 20-25, 17-25. However, they controlled the last two sets 25-17, 15-13 to emerge victorious. In another match Far-western Region had a comfortable victory over Eastern Region in straight sets 25-15, 25-14, 25-22.



In men´s category, Employment Creation Service (ECS) Club recorded an easy win over Mid-western Region, while Central Region had a five-set victory over PLA men. ECS beat Mid-west 25-19, 25-15, 25-19. The PLA took the first two sets 25-23, 20-25, but were unable to gain the third or the decisive set. They suffered a 19-25, 20-20 defeat in the third and the fourth sets. Finally, in the last set they faced a 16-18 loss.



In another match, Jawalakhel Volleyball Training Center (JVTC) struggled until four sets against Eastern Region to secure their victory. They edged past Eastern Region 20-25, 25-21, 25-14, 25-18.





Bikash in last 16 of National Open Badminton



KATHMANDU, Sept 9: Bikash Shrestha of the Nepal Police Club (NPC) advanced into the pre-quarterfinal under the men´s single category in the National Open Badminton Tournament underway at the Nepal Police Club, Exhibition Road, and the APF Court, Halchowk.



Bikash who enjoyed walkover in the second round defeated Raju Shrestha of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) 21-11, 21-5 in the third round.



Similarly, Indra Mahat and Pankaj Chand of the APF Club also secured both in the last 16. Second ranked Ram Singh Chaudhary also easily booked his spot in the pre-quarterfinal round. Likewise, Rajan Shiwakoti, Rajan Krishna Tamrakar, Bishal Pradhan, Surya Thapa and Ratnajeet Tamang also made it through the to pre-quarterfinal round.



In women´s single category, Puja Shrestha ranked number one and second Saradevi Tamang entered second round winning their respective matches. Puja of the APF Club edged out Sabina Panthi of the same while Saradevi of the Army Club defeated Mira Tamang of 21-11, 21-8.



In women´s doubles too, Saradevi partnering with Bina Tulachan made it through to the last four. The duo defeated Kabita Joshi and Sabita Paneru´s pair from Kanchanpur 21-7, 21-7. Likewise, Sabina and Sita Dahal´s pair from the APF, Ratna Rai and Nirmala Magar´s pair also secured spot in the semis.





Dhatani, KC enter Ramailo Doubles Badminton semis



KATHMANDU, Sept 9: Ranjit Dhatani teamed up with Manmohan KC to reach the semifinal of the Third Ramailo Doubles Badminton being held in Jawalakhel, Lalitpur, on Wednesday.



Likewise, pair of Abhimanyu KC and Prakash Karki too booked their berth in the final four of the tournament organized by Samsung Jawalakhel Youth Club. Kapil Shahi and Parashar Pandey also advanced to the semifinal of the tournament defeating their respective opponents.



In other matches, pairs of Sangeet Rana and Roshan Khadka, and Kirojman Singh Basnet and Rabindra Karki advanced into the pre-quarterfinals of the tournament.
