KATHMANDU, April 23: Foreign teachers are now eligible to get teaching license in Nepal. Amending the existing provision that barred foreign teachers from getting legal teaching status, the Teachers' Service Commission (TSC) has now allowed expats to teach in schools.

Issuing a public notice, TSC has stated that the non-Nepalis teaching in Nepal for 15 years or more can apply for the license." Foreigners engaged in teaching service before November 9, 2000 are eligible for the license," the TSC statement read.

The commission further stated that allowing non-Nepali teachers to seek licenses could address the shortage of teachers in Nepal for specialized subject like Mathematics, Science and English . However, the office fails to estimate the number of expat teachers working in Nepal.

There is a shortage of more than 50,000 teachers across the country, even though the TSC recruited around 13000 permanent teachers last year. Another 3000 vacancies have been opened for this year to address this shortage.
