The Technical Executive Board of NSC developed the strategy after the government allocated a budget of around Rs 22.5 million for preparation of national teams.
As per the strategy, NSC will conduct regular medical and physical tests of athletes included in the national teams. "We´ll conduct general medical test including pulmonary function test. Meanwhile, the physical test will include the test of endurance, strength, flexibility of body, speed and specific test related to the games," said NSC Member Secretary Yuvaraj Lama. [break]
According to Lama, Yoga and counseling programs will be conducted for the mental and psychological management of athletes. "We´ll also raise awareness among athletes about diet and nutrition and we´ll prescribe them individual diet charts," said Lama about the another strategy.
"We´ll give trainers and coaches knowledge about sports psychology, biomechanics and its analysis along with scientific training programs," he added.
The strategy also includes national and international exposure programs for the athletes and regular assessment and evaluation of the athletes.
"NSC had never developed any scientific training programs and strategies before and we were just lucky to win international medals without proper training programs," said Lama. "I hope this strategy will help in the development of Nepali sports in the long run," he added.
According to Lama, NSC will assess the implementation of the strategy after six months and improve it for the closed camp trainings. He informed that NSC would also bring foreign experts to teach some technical issues such as analysis of biomechanics.
Meanwhile, Director of National Team Preparation Department at NSC Harihar Shrestha termed the strategy as a historical step by NSC. "To achieve international success in sports, we need to develop strategy and I hope it is the first stepping stone," said Shrestha.
NSC has been providing financial assistance to 10 different sports associations for conducting regular trainings of their national teams. Currently, athletics, karate, taekwondo, wushu, badminton, cricket, wrestling, weightlifting, judo and boxing are receiving financial support from NSC. "We´ll include some other games with the potential to win international medals under the program in future," said Lama.
Development plan
Meanwhile, NSC has categorized 31 games into four different sections based on the possibility of their development in the country.
NSC has categorized volleyball, athletics, karate and taekwondo as sports that could be developed and conducted in all 75 districts of the country. Meanwhile, wushu, football, table tennis, badminton, kabaddi, chess and cricket are considered as sports that could be developed in 40 districts in the current situation.
"This categorization is the outcome of the survey and research conducted by NSC. We have considered the availability of athletes, infrastructure, coaches and associations of the concerned sport while categorizing the games," said Lama. "We´ll come up with development plans based on this categorization and deploy coaches accordingly," he added.
