Western Region wins President's Running Shield

KATHMANDU, June 7: Western Region finished on top in the Inter-regional Nationwide President´s Running Shield that conclued in the capital on Friday.

Western Region accumulated a total of 223 points to claim the team championship while Central Region finished second on 199 points, seven points ahead of Mid-western Region. Eastern Region (125 points) and Far-western Region (76 points) secured fourth and fifth positions respectively.



President Ram Baran Yadav awarded the winning teams at his residence at Shital Niwas on Friday. The top three teams received Rs 25,000, Rs 20,000 and Rs 15,000 respectively along with shields.



Ashish Chaudhary sets third national record

Ashis Chaudhary of Central Region set a third national record in athletics at the school level during the President´s Running Shield on Friday. Chaudhary set a new record of 22.5 seconds in boys´ 200 m sprint during the heats at the Dasharath Stadium. Earlier on Thursday, Bimal Basnet had set a record in the heat of the same event clocking 22.9 seconds. However, Chaudhary clocked 23.3 seconds in the final to finish second.



Earlier, Chaudhary had set a national record each in individual and team event. Chaudhary had set a new record of 10.9 seconds in 100m sprint while he had teamed up with Raj Kumar Chaudhary, Shikhar Uprety and Prem Narayan Mahato to set a national record in 4x100m relay. The team had finished the relay in 45.8 seconds.

Chaudhary bagged gold in long jump as well to finish with four gold medals. Chaudhary jumped 6.30 m.

Birendra Pasi of Western Region clocked 2 minutes 5.8 seconds to claim the boys´ 800m gold while Nistha Kumari Tharu of Western Region clocked 2 minutes 38.2 seconds to take gold in the girls´ category.



Khem Raj Shahi of Mid-western Region won the boys´ shot put with a throw of 12.52 m while Chandra Kala Lamagade took gold in the girls´ section with a throw of 10.27 m.



Meanwhile, Mid-western Region won gold in both boys´ and girls´ 4x400m relay.



The top three finishers of individual events bagged Rs 3,000, Rs 2,000 and Rs 1,000 respectively. The members of the top three relay teams bagged Rs 2,000, Rs 1,500 and Rs 700 each respectively. The new national record holders were given Rs 5,000 each. National Sports Council Member Secretary Yuvaraj Lama, Treasurer Indra Bahadur Thing, among others, gave away the awards to the winners.



Central, Western win volleyball titles

Central Region claimed the boys´ volleyball title while the girl´s title went to Western Region on Friday. In the boys´ final, Central Region beat Western Region 28-26, 25-16, 28-26. In the girls´ title clash Western Region edged past Central Region 25-23, 25-19, 25-27, 28-26. In the third-place playoff, Mid-western Region edged past Far-western Region in straight sets. Each member of the top three teams received Rs 2,000, Rs 1,500 and Rs 1,000 respectively.
