KATHMANDU, May 16: Police arrested four persons in possession of 16 kgs of gold that was smuggled from Tibet via land route, in the capital, on Thursday.
A special police squad from Metropolitan Police Range (MPR), Hanumandhoka, arrested Namgyal Sherpa, Sanu Sherpa, Gyane Sherpa and Sonam Sherpa from Bouddha who had reached there in a taxi with the gold. [break]
According to MPR spokesperson DSP Chakra Bahadur Singh, a total of 16 gold bars, each weighing a kilogram, were seized from them who were hiding the gold in the soles of their shoes.
With security check tightened at the airport, smugglers have recently resorted to the Khasa-Tatopani route to smuggle gold from Tibet. In the recent past, police had seized 5 kgs of illegal gold from Thamel. The main person involved in the smuggling is still on the run.
