They met at a time when the parties failed to forge political consensus as a way out of the current political impasse and have announced their own protest programs.[break]
During the meeting, President Dr. Yadav, as usual, urged the senior leaders to hold talks to find the outlet to the existing political impasse. However, the meeting could not reach to any conclusion, as the leaders remained stiff on their own stances.
President Dr. Yadav had already stopped issuing deadlines for consensus to the leaders after his efforts for ninth time could not give any result.
The major political parties have also stopped making any formal effort for consensus for a long time and that the opposition parties have announced their protest programs and resorted to street agitation.
The government alliance has also fixed various programs including mass mobilization, as per which, the alliance has been organizing a mass assembly in the Capital, today.
The programs of protest and mass mobilization have widened the gap between the government alliance that includes Unified CPN-Maoist and United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF), and the opposition parties-- Nepali Congress, and CPN (UML) rather than exerting them pressure for national consensus.
Emerging from the meeting, Chairman of the UML, Jhalanath Khanal, said the national political consensus was not possible due to the government and the nation has headed for confrontation.
The opposition parties are to go for street protests to exert pressure to the government for national consensus, he said.
UML Chairman Khanal said,"The opposition parties are forced to go for street agitation in view of exerting pressure for immediate consensus and ensuring the Constituent Assembly elections.
The clash is invited due to the activities of the government alliance." The opposition parties would topple the government through the street protests, he added.
President Dr. Yadav in the meeting urged the political parties to forge consensus immediately, said Former Prime Minister Khanal.
Similarly, leader of the Unified CPN (Maoist), Amik Sherchan, said the leaders have put forth their party´s views to make environment for going to the elections.
"President Dr. Yadav says there is no alternative to unity among the political parties, do not pelt stones on each other, and reach to consensus through democratic system, and urged the leaders to forge political consensus and move ahead, as there was no alternative to unity among them," said Sherchan.
Likewise, Nepali Congress (NC) Vice President Ram Chandra Paudel said President Dr. Yadav had urged the political parties for political consensus but they had failed to forge political consensus and that the political parties need to reach to a certain conclusion.
NC leader Paudel said he had appealed to the President to think and move ahead as per national and international practices.
