KATHMANDU, Dec 26: President Bidya Devi Bhandari has urged all the authorities concerned to make collective efforts by creating favorable conditions for the transmission of knowledge, skills and experience inherent in senior citizens, on the occasion of the first National Senior Citizens Day, 2021.
Giving a message of good wishes on the occasion, President Bhandari said that the government should effectively implement the provision of monthly social security allowances to senior citizens as well as seat reservation in public transport, 50 percent discount on transportation fare, 50 percent discount on healthcare and provision of senior citizen identity card.

The president said she is confident that this day will inspire all to facilitate the senior citizens who are the source of love, affection and compassion in respect, dignity, proper protection and dignified living.
Similarly, Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba said that the senior citizens should be respected not only as leaders of society but also as guiding personalities, source of inspiration and a symbol of pride.
The Prime Minister said in his message, “It is the responsibility of not only the government but also the family and society to create an environment conducive for the protection of human rights, economic and social security of senior citizens and a dignified and safe life for them.”
The government has decided to celebrate December 26 every year as the Senior Citizens Day. This day is being commemorated to mark the historic day when social security allowance was announced for senior citizens.
