During the meeting, Dahal proposed to amend the interim constitution and add a provision to elect a new president. “The opposition parties have always provoked the president to take an executive role, if the election is to be held, then why not we go for new president through polls along with new parliament,” sources said quoting Dahal. Emerging from the meeting, Dahal said, “There is no alternative to end the current crisis than to forge consensus for which the political parties have to resolve the contentious issues seen in the new constitution and then promulgate it, adding that “NC’s leadership will be acceptable to us if they agree to hold election after promulgating the new constitution.”
The UCPN (Maoist) chair also said that the present government should be retained, if the parties hold election without promulgating new statute.
NC General Secretary Krishna Prasad Sitaula, who was also present in the meet said, “There is no alternative to fresh polls to end the current political impasse and a national government can only hold the polls but for that Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai should step down and pave way.”
NC is set to discuss Dahal’s proposal and come up with a decision on the matter.
PM Bhattarai was also present in the meeting.
