Earlier this week NSC´s 93rd board meeting held under the chairmanship of its patron Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai decided to recommend the cabinet to dissolve the two committees that have been at the center of controversy over their legitamacy. [break]
The board meeting had also decided to prepare 2,500 to 3,000 school sports teacher by 2069/70 BS, construct six covered halls at Satdobato Shooting Range premises without affecting the shooting range and asked the government to provide Rs 5000 as allowance per month to Asian games medalist and Olympians above 60-year age.
The speakers of the interaction program organized by Nepal Confederation of Sports, a sports wing of CPN-UML however, raised serious questions over the intention of NSC leadership over the NSC Board´s Decision. Yubaraj Lama, a political appointee from UCPN-Maoist heads NSC as its member secretary.
CPN-UML politburo member Rajendra Pandey told the interaction that plans to prepare 3,000 coaches was a plot to field disqualified combatants at the NSC. "The Maoists only look at its benefit rather than national interest," he said. "They intend to field disqualified combatants who do not have any knowledge of coaching."
NC leader Surendra Pandey referring to nomination of Yubaraj Lama as the member secretary of NSC said, "UCPN-Maoist selected an artists to lead NSC and that it wants to seize power at the NSC. Further more, it want to use athletes to seize state power."
"If a qualified person doesn´t wish to be a Maoist member, then he can´t be one of those proposed 3,000 coaches. Nepali Congress won´t sit quietly if such a situation continues in sports. It will support you (Confederation)," NC leader Surendra Pandey said.
Regarding dissolution of internationally recognized NOC, Surendra said if there was no Olympic movement in the country players can´t develop their career as they won´t get a chance to compete at international level. NC leader also urged all to expose the Maoist conspiracy.
CPN UML leader and youth in-charge Yogesh Bhattarai assured of the party´s support to any protests by the Confederation. "The decision of NSC is an exercise to take the country towards autocracy. The government does not have the right to nominate and dissolve bodies after the election has been declared," Bhattarai said."
Jhapa Khanal, the vice president of Youth Association, a youth wing of CPN-UML said Lama had dissolved sports associations that did not support him. "We are ready to support any kind of protest program that Confederation announces."
Internationally recognized NOC General Secretary and central member of CPN-UML Jeewan Ram Shrestha said though the NSC board´s decision sounded good on paper, it was filled with conspiracy and was a part of a larger strategy to seize state power. "The decision to dissolve NOC is against the ethics and the Olympic charter."
Expressing objection over NSC´s decision to field 3,000 coaches, Shrestha said, "NSC does not have sufficient infrastructure to deploy the coaches. Fielding large number of coaches is the just a plot." He also criticized NSC´s decision to construct six covered hall at the Satdobato Shooting Range premises.
He also claimed of large scale corruption during the Sixth National Games held some four months ago in the Far Western Region.
