BIRATNAGAR, Jan 3: Lawyers have started to plead on behalf of our correspondent Khilanath Dhakal, charged with contempt of court, at the Biratnagar Appellate Court from Tuesday.

The Appellate Court Bar Association chapters in Morang and Sunsari had jointly filed contempt of court case against Dhakal claiming his news report “General date on abduction case” published in Nagarik daily on December 21 slighted the court. [break]

The advocates urged the bench of justices Kumar Chudal and Giri Raj Poudyal to release Dhakal on general date arguing that the news report did not defame the court. The court has summoned Dhakal on Wednesday as the hearing did not complete Tuesday.

The advocates argued the contempt of court case was registered in haste to widen the distance between the judiciary and the fourth estate. They claimed that the directive to ask Dhakal to be present in court within three days without being allowed the time for travel was sad.

Madhav Basnet, Uddhav Chandra Ghimire, LILA Mani Poudel and Sushila Thapa pleaded on behalf of Dhakal Tuesday after Ram Lal Sutihar, Peshal Neupane, Rajendra Bhattarai, Suresh Lal Shrestha, Ram Prasad Niroula, Shanti Ram Bhandari, Madhav Acharya, Devi Ghimire, Ram Prasad Sitoula, Ramesh Koirala, Chuda Mani Acharya, Prakash Nath Uprety, Rekha Thapa Pandey, Madhav Bhattarai and Chandi Prasad Parajuli completed arguing against Dhakal.
