3 samples from Jajarkot test positive for swine flu

KATHMANDU, April 14: Some of the samples collected from patients in Jajarkot district, which has been reeling under a disease outbreak since more than two weeks, have tested positive for swine flu virus.

Out of 12 samples examined by the National Public Health Laboratory (NPHL) of the Department of Health Services (DoHS), the N1H1 infection has been confirmed in three.


Health experts deployed from the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division (EDCD) in Jajarkot district had collected the samples of blood, cough and stools of some of the infected people, which were then sent to NPHL for examination.

Fifteen people have already died and hundreds of others have been infected of the disease that broke out in the district more than two weeks ago.

"Out of 12 samples examined by the NPHL, H1N1 virus has been detected in three," said Dr Baburam Marasini, director at EDCD. He informed that expert at the NPHL are further studying the samples.

Four people, including CPN-UML politburo member and former Constituent Assembly (CA) member Ram Nath Dhakal died of virus in capital alone. Over 700 were infected from the virus in last three months.

The EDCD said that out of total infected people most are from the capital.

Doctors say infants, elderly and ailing people with diminished immunity are more vulnerable to the virus. She said common symptoms of influenza A include fever, sore throat, muscle pain, severe headache, weakness, fatigue and cough.
