KATHMANDU, April 8: Lawmakers from parties including the ruling Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) strongly criticized the Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) for failing to arrest the ´murderer´ of UML cadre Prachanda Thaiba.

NC lawmaker Prakash Sharan Mahat charged that the Maoist party do not have faith in democracy. "Rule of law is a basic tenet of democracy. But the Maoists are undermining these values," he said.

He said the prime minister and Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal has allowed the law and order situation to deteriorate. He charged that the Maoists are misusing state coffers for the benefit of their cadres.

"The Maoist party and its leaders are bent on destroying the democratic institutions in the country," he said, adding, "The prime minister ordered the government to allow the PLA to participate in the national games in violation of the peace agreement, which states that the PLA combatants shall remain inside the UN-monitored camps until the integration," he said.

He said the Maoist party is filling the bureaucracy with its cadres. He said the NC will not remain a mere onlooker until the prime minister assures the parliament that he will do away with all aberrations immediately. "NC feels it is meaningful to attend the parliament meeting until these issues are addressed," he said.

He alleged that the Maoists facilitated the escape of Sujit BK, the alleged murderer of UML cadre Prachanda Thaiba in Butwal. He said the Maoist argument that the parliamentary system is not favorable for democracy is in fact an indirect attack on democracy and democratic values. "The Maoists are neither serious in formulating a new constitution nor in maintaining the law and order situation in the country. Rather, they are serious about imposing an authoritarian rule," he said.

UML lawmaker Sabitra Bhusal said although prime minister had assured that he will bring Sujit BK to justice, it has not yet happened. "The Maoist party is cheating its coalition partner," Bhusal said.

Maoist lawmaker CP Gajurel said his party was in the process of handing over Sujit BK over to the NHRC but he fled. "When we were taking the accused Sujit BK to NHRC, he suddenly disappeared. “BK violated party discipline and we have already initiated action against him," he said.

Madhesi Peoples´ Rights Forum (MPRF) lawmaker Atmaram Prasad Sah asked why the government has not yet arrested the murderer of Thaiba.

Tarai-Madhes Democratic Party (TMDP) lawmaker Brijesh Kumar Gupta charged that the Maoist party helped Sujit BK escape while he was being handed over to the NHRC.

He said the law and order situation has completely collapsed. He said the formation of Special Committee for Integration of Maoist Combatants was unconstitutional.

Sadbhawana Party lawmaker Anil Kumar Jha said the government failed to take the negotiation with armed groups in Tarai to conclusion.

CPN (Marxist-Leninist) lawmaker CP Mainali charged that the Maoists are violating the agreement on army integration and structure of the state.

RPP lawmaker Lokendra Bahadur Chand demanded that state restructuring commission be formed immediately. He said the state is promoting impunity.

On Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal´s recent remarks made in Tundikhel, Chand said the prime minister by making derogatory remarks failed to live up to the dignity of his office.

Nepal Workers and Peasants Party (NWPP) lawmaker Lila Nyaichai said the common people are largely disillusioned because of the language used by prime minister and ministers.
