KATHMANDU, May 30: Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City Balendra Shah, has criticized the parliamentarians after the controversial MPs Development Fund was revived through the new budget. He commented on the social media site today that MPs of federal parliament had lowered themselves to the level of ward chairperson of local governments.
Finance Minister Prakasharan Mahat allocated Rs 825 billion for the infrastructure development program of the constituency area in the new budget unveiled on Monday. The announcement to grant Rs 500 million to each MP of House of Representatives (HoR) elected under the First Past the Post (FPTP) electoral system has courted controversy from various quarters.

The decision of Finance Minister Dr Mahat comes amid criticisms that parliamentarians were misusing the funds to feed workers instead of developing any infrastructures that benefit ordinary people.
“After receiving the MP Development Fund, MPs have now come to the level of Ward Chairman. If you want to do the work of the ward chairman, why do you even want to become a member of parliament, honorable members?” he wrote in his social media account.
