What brought Medanta to Nepal?
The creation of Medanta was to deliver the highest quality healthcare to people at affordable cost and to set a new standard for this part of the world by bringing all sciences together. We are doing this to make medical treatment affordable by developing our on way of treatment. Nepal is a country of about 30 million people and our relation with Norvic from the very beginning encouraged us for the tie-up. Nepalis deserve what everybody else deserves. Norvic is our natural partner because we share the common values. The tie-up is the meeting of two minds.
How will the Nepalis benefit from this tie-up?
Firstly, it will bring expertise in the sector of treatment of bone and joints and neurology. Cardiac is there already. Besides, diabetes is being another problem in addition to heart which is our other focus. We will provide facilities first, and then education. Medanta’s expertise will help in education for nursing and medical students. We have developed low cost medical facilities for villages. These models can be applicable in villages of Nepal so that health facilities will not be city-centered.
Can you elaborate more on the low cost medical facility? How does it work?
To explain this, I would like to give an example of Medanta. We have 1,500 beds and the cost is divided among many people making us capable of offering it at low costs. We charge 20 percent less than the market price and we can do the same thing here as well. We can expand the capacity of hospital in order to reduce treatment cost. Low cost model for village is a model where basic services are available with no bells and whistles. The focus on village model is to provide facilities, keeping cost of technology and infrastructure minimum.
Can you tell us more about Norvic-Medanta Advantage?
We are planning to upgrade surgical and other services. For this, need to train people. So, the primary focus will be on training doctors. We will be sending our experts on neurology, oncology and orthopedics, among others to train doctors here. Medanta also plans to support Norvic to establish new departments and take the hospital to the world-class standard.
Do you think the tie-up will help promote health tourism in Nepal?
We think so. Medanta is already a world class institute and we believe with this tie-up, Norvic will be more efficient in delivering world class service. This will not only benefit the locals but also attract foreigners. Nepal has a good climate and other factors to attract. Latest technology and team of expertise will be other attractive features.
