CHITWAN, Dec 7: Nepali Congress senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba on Tuesday said that efforts to elect Ram Chandra Paudel unopposed as prime minister could affect politics of consensus.

Speaking at a function organized by Press Union in Chitwan, Deuba said, "There could be a problem in forging consensus among political parties if we pressed for unopposed election of Ram Chandra Paudel for prime minister." [break]

Deuba further said that there should be open discussions on three options as floated by the Supreme Court (SC) regarding the issue of prime ministerial election.

According to Deuba, the SC has floated three options regarding the prime ministerial election. First option: Elect Paudel unopposed as a prime minister; second, parties should find out amicable solution by forging consensus on the issue; and third, parliament and speaker should take decision on the issue to end the ongoing prime ministerial election.

"It is true that the SC´s one of intentions was to elect Paudel as prime minister unopposed," he said, adding, "But the possibility of forging consensus on the issue could be problematic if Nepali Congress presses for only Paudel´s unopposed election. Deuba said the issue on whether Paudel´s candidacy still stands should be resolved by consulting lawyers.
