Nepal's disappointing run goes on

REPUBLICA, Nov 24: Wednesday too turned out to be disappointing for Nepal in the 16th Asian Games (Asiad) underway at Guangzhou, China as her run for medal in archery, athletics and karate received a big blow.



Archery



Nepal´s run in archery ended on Wednesday following defeat of two Nepali archers.[break] Under individual elimination round, Asim Serchan was defeated 4-0 by Chu Sian Cheng of Malaysia. Another participant of the same category Jeet Bahadur Moktan also lost with the same score against Rahul Baneerjee of India.



Athletics



In men´s 200 m sprint, Tika Ram Tharu finished last among eight runners in the heat round. He clocked 22.51 second to achieve personal best timing. Earlier, he had his personal best of 22.69 second. Ram Krishna Chaudhary holds the national record in the event with 21.90 second.



Karate



Karate could not resurrect Nepal´s fading medal hope in the ongoing 16th Asian Games as four Nepali karatekas failed on Wednesday.



Rabindra Dahal lost to Mohammad Ghasami of Iran in the first round of men´s 55 kg weight category of kumite. Ghasami won the match 1-0.



Likewise, Kalpana Basnet also lost to Chansouda Phetsiriseng of Laos in the first round of women´s 50 kg of kumite. Basnet lost the match 3-1. Basnet was leading the match 1-0 until the last five seconds. In the dying seconds, she received an upper-kick, which turned the result upside down.



Meanwhile, Kushal Shrestha lost to Dimitri Kazanov of Kazakhstan 5-0 in the first round of men´s individual kata.



Roji Nagarkoti lost to Japan´s Rika Usami 5-0 in the first round of women´s individual kata. Nagarkoti got a second chance in repechage, after Usami reached the final of the event. However, Nagarkoti lost 5-0 again to Lee Leechim of Malaysia.
