DHANKUTA, Aug 5: Twenty one people lost their lives and 209 injured in accidents in Dhankuta last year. At least six accidents have been recorded every month in the district. This is almost double the number of death caused by road accidents in the district the previous year.

Basanta Adhikary, assistant sub inspector and in-charge of District Traffic Police Office, Dhankuta said there is minimal presence of traffic personnel in the hilly areas. As a result, drivers drive carelessly and violate rules. [break]

Apart from these, treacherous road along Koshi river, driver´s lack of experience, and overload have also led to a number of accidents in the district.

In 2008/9 alone 3,420 drivers were penalized for violating traffic rules. Likewise, last year, 725 drivers were penalized.

On the initiative of District Police Office-Dhankuta, a security committee has recently been formed in a bid to minimize road accidents along Dharan-Dhankuta road of the Koshi highway. However, the committee has not been able to curb accidents in the highway.
