ITAHARI, Dec 7: A month after a dozen inmates of the Jhumka-based Eastern Regional Jail escaped from the jail, the jail administration has transferred 18 other jailbirds to different prisons across the country.

The inmates being transferred the jail are believed to have close links with Ali Afsar, who masterminded the jailbreak about a month ago. The inmates were transferred in two phases.[break]

Among the transferred , one has been sent to Morang Jail, six to Ramechaap Jail, three to Rautahat Jail, 4 to Birgunj Jail and five to Bhimphedi Jail. However, the identities of the transferred inmates have been kept secret.

According to the regional jail administration, the transfer of inmates was felt necessary as the newly appointed jail warden was suspected of allowing Diwakar Khatiwada, an inmate, to form groups inside the jail.

On November 9, 12 inmates of the Jhumka-based jail had escaped the jail by digging an 80-foot tunnel.

Bangladeshi national Ali Afsar, who masterminded the jailbreak, and Ramesh Yadav of Narsingha VDC-4 have already been arrested in India.

"We have already identified both the inmates. Now we need permission from the government to bring them home for prosecution," said SP Saurav Rana.
