CHITWAN, April 27: A Maoist PLA combatant was arrested with a grenade, a khukuri and a compass in Chitwan on Tuesday. He was heading for Kathmandu.

Platoon commander Santosh Rai ´Pratirodh´ of the Belchowk, Udayapur sattelite camp of the PLA second division cantoned in Sindhuli district, was arrested by district police during security check on a night bus at Gondrang in Bharatpur. Police made Rai public on Tuesday. He is 24.

Rai told police that he was heading for Kathmandu on party business. He also said he was instructed by the cantonment to tell police, in case of arrest, that he was associated with Maoist leader Pasang. Police also informed that Rai claimed to be a bodyguard of a senior Maoist leader.

The identity card recovered from Rai says his code number is 1909. The card was issued for Asoj 2063 BS to Bhadra 2064.

Rai left Katari in Udayapur for Kathmandu by a bus (Na 4 Kha 351). Senior Superintendent of Police Dhiru Basnet said Rai has been charged under the arms and ammunition act.

The district court Chitwan on Tuesday sent Rai into five-day judicial detention.

Police suspect he was headed for Kathmandu for the Maoist movement there beginning May 2.
