KATHMANDU, Dec 31: Senior Nepali Congress (NC) leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala has emphasized the importance of national unity and reconciliation, warning that Nepal is once again facing pressures and self-interests from global powers, five decades after similar challenges.
Issuing a message on the occasion of National Reconciliation Day, Dr. Koirala recalled the historic return of democratic leaders, including B.P. Koirala and Ganeshman Singh, from eight years of exile in India. At that time, amid global superpower rivalries, B.P. had underscored that national unity and reconciliation were indispensable for safeguarding Nepal’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

“Only through national unity and reconciliation can we protect our country’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence,” Dr. Koirala said, urging Nepalis to reflect on B.P.’s message “in our hearts, words, and deeds.”
Dr. Koirala stressed that the relevance of national reconciliation is not limited to the Nepali Congress alone. Achieving lasting unity requires the awareness, vigilance, and solidarity of all Nepalis, beyond partisan politics. He added that transforming B.P.’s vision into a shared national commitment is a responsibility that rests on the shoulders of the NC.
Drawing a parallel with B.P.’s historic decision to return from exile despite personal risks, Dr. Koirala urged leaders to put aside disputes, differences, and personal ambitions to safeguard democracy and ensure peace and prosperity for future generations. He also highlighted the necessity of unity and reconciliation within the NC, describing them as essential for national stability and political relevance.
“To face new challenges in the political landscape, we have no alternative but full unity. The NC can play a leading role in national politics, guided by B.P. Koirala’s policy of reconciliation,” he said, concluding his message with a call to internalize and follow the principles of national unity and reconciliation.
