Govt forms probe into Bardiya killing

KATHMANDU, March 17: The government on Wednesday formed a committee to probe into the killing of three women by Nepal Army personnel deployed for the security of Bardiya National Park on March 11.



A Cabinet meeting formed the committee led by by Joint Government Attorney Saroj Prasad Gautam, according to Home Minister Bhim Rawal. It also decided to provide the families of each victim with Rs 25,000 immediate relief to perform their last rites. [break]



Nepal Army personnel had shot dead three women, including a 12-year-old girl, from Hariharpur of Surkhet who had entered the park to collect the bark of Kaulo tree.



Meanwhile, the government also suspended Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Nepal Police Parshuram Khatri and formed a committee led by AIG Rabindra Pratap Shah to probe into an incident in which Khatri was involved in a restaurant brawl in the Capital last Friday after getting drunk.



Nepal Police had requested the Home Ministry on Tuesday to suspend Khatri for his unprofessional behavior at the Thamel restaurant, after an internal investigation found Khatri guilty.



The Cabinet also formed a committee led by Peace Minister Rakam Chemjong for the supervision of Maoist combatants. The committee includes energy minister, minister for physical planning and works, minister for health and minister for finance as members.

The Cabinet also decided to increase the monthly allowances for those injured in the People´s Movement II and the families of martyr´s by Rs 1,200. After the decision, each injured person will now receive Rs 3,200 a month while families of each martyr will get Rs 6,200 a month.



The government also decided to provide allowances to the employees of the local bodies in different districts categorized as A-E as per the government rules from the first month of 2067 BS.



The meeting approved allocation of Rs 18.61 million for the medal winning players of the 11th South Asian Games (SAG) and okayed Defense Minister Bidya Bhandari´s week-long China visit from April 22.



The Cabinet meeting decided to promote four Lieutenant Colonels of Nepal Army to the posts of Brigadier Generals. Those promoted are Bijendra Gautam, Amod Narsingh Rana, Ramesh Kumar Pun and Suresh Singh Thakuri.



House panel takes up the issue



Also on Wednesday, the Women, Children and Social Affairs Committee of parliament formed a nine-member team led by its chairperson Sandhya Devi to conduct a field report of the killing. The committee also also summoned Defense Minister Bidya Bhandari to the committee to clarify about the incident.



It also called on the government to form an all-side committee to probe into the incident and release Krishna Bahadur BK who was arrested by the army.
