The MTPD has penalized 13,469 traffic rule violators by Friday under the campaign that began on December 11. [break]
MTPD spokesman Deputy Superintendent of Police Pawan Giri informed that MTPD has deployed 85 traffic police in civvies at different places in the Kathmandu Valley to implement the campaign.
Majority of the drivers -- 5,135 -- were fined for lane violations. Similarly, 48 violated traffic signals whereas numbers plates of 253 vehicles were found manipulated.
MTPD said action has also been taken for speeding, overtaking from wrong side, discarding lanes and using mobile phone while driving. Police have also fined 16 motorists for making U-turn in prohibited areas while 31 were fined for modifying their vehicles.
Initially, the MTPD fined around 200 vehicles a day for traffic rules violation when the traffic police were deployed on uniform. However, since the launch of the new campaign, around 400 vehicles on an average are found violating rules. They are fined between Rs 100 and Rs 1,000 as per the nature of their offence, according to the traffic police.
Similarly, in its another drive to curb extortion by taxi drivers in the valley; the traffic division has penalized 721 taxis on the charge of overcharging passengers since January 13. The MTPD has penalized 230 taxi drivers who refused to carry passengers under the meter system. Similarly, 341 taxi drivers have been penalized for meter tampering whereas 63 taxi drivers were found driving without necessary documents.
Likewise, 87 taxi drivers were punished for operating without installing meters and refusing to carry passengers.
