SUNDRAWATI (DOLAKHA), Aug 1: Twelve households of Sundrawati-1, Dhedakaule have started sleeping under tents in the nearby jungle because of the threat of landslides. [break]

The locals have been staying for the last four days at local Pyunbote Community Forest in tents provided by Dolakha Red Cross Society after the hill above the village started to erode and the village started to subside.

The trees in the jungle above the village started to fall and murky water came out of the ground since last Sunday. "We don´t know when it will slip," says 72-year-old Karnananda Shivakoti, pointing anxiously toward the field above.

"Were it not for the jungle there above our houses, we would all have died already," says Krishna Prasad Shivakoti. Land 500 meters above the village started to subside after incessant rain and the subsiding had not stopped as of Saturday morning. One hectare of jungle and 100 meters of land have already subsided and villagers are worried this will eventually lead to a landslide.

"We send the children to adjoining Marse village to sleep during the night while we sleep inside the tents," Kul Prasdad Shivakoti says. Seventy two-year-old Karnananda and his spouse Divyamaya are having a torrid time spending nights under tents. "The state should do something for us and shift our village to a safe place," urge the senior-citizen couple who say only two of their seven children are in the village.

"We stay in tents during the night. There is no toilet. We can´t even go back to our houses," complains Srijana Shivakoti. All the displaced locals are Shivakotis.

The locals pleaded with the District Natural Disaster Rescue Committee, consisting of leaders of major political parties, that came for an inspection from district headquarters Charikot, to shift them to a safer place. But CDO Shree Krishna Shrestha says nothing can be done until the inspection team submits its report.
