BAJURA, Jan 27: An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter Scale struck Bajura on Tuesday at 2:43 PM, resulting in the displacement of 42 families from three municipalities. The families are now completely displaced from their homes.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Surya Bahadur Thapa informed Republica that the earthquake displaced 12 families in Himali Rural Municipality, 15 in Gaumul Rural Municipality, and 15 in Badimalika Municipality. Out of these displaced families, 12 from Badimalika, four from Himali, and 14 from Gaumul rural municipalities are currently staying at their relatives’ places. Five families are living under sheds made of tarpaulin because their houses were damaged by the earthquake and are uninhabitable.
After the earthquake, three families - one from Badimalika, one from Gaumul and one from Himali - are forced to spend the night under tarpaulin sheds. Thapa said that a family from Badimalika has started living in a temple.
Only 5,565 quake-damaged houses rebuilt in Gorkha
Meanwhile, according to the District Police Office, nearly 400 houses were damaged due to the earthquake. According to the details of the damage collected by the police, the biggest damage was done in Badimalika Municipality.
DSP Thapa said that 21 houses were completely damaged in Badimalika, three in Budhinanda and one in Budhiganga, 19 in Himali, 11 in Gaumul, four in Khaptad Chhededaha and one in Swamikartik Khapar Rural Municipality.
Similarly, 31 houses in Badimalika, nine in Budhinanda, nine in Himali, five in Khaptad Chhededaha and five in Gaumul have been partially damaged.
Jamuna Rokaya, 32, from Zuri, Gaumul Rural Municipality-2, died in the earthquake. Five other people were injured. They have been identified as Rajdal Bohra, 35, from Gaumul-1, Chandra Mahat, 42, from Badimalika-1, Susrita Thapa, 6, from Himali-1, and Sarita Nepali,16, from Himali-6.
Mahat, and Nepali have been treated and returned home, while Thapa is still receiving treatment. Additionally, 35 sheep belonging to Bohra died in the earthquake. The police are currently gathering information about the extent of the damage caused by the earthquake.
