KATHMANDU, June 30: Ai Ping, deputy head of the International Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, met CPN-UML Chairman Jhalanath Khanal at the UML’s headquarters at Balkhu in the capital on Saturday.

During the meeting, Ai expressed concerns over Nepal’s contemporary political issues, including the exiting political crisis in the post-Constituent Assembly (CA) dissolution period and other issues related to peace and constitution making processes. [break]

The visiting Chinese official also made it clear that China wants to see Nepal resolve the current crisis, forging political consensus. “Nepal’s peace and progress is our concern and interest in the changed global context,” the UML, in a press statement, quoted Ai as saying.

On the occasion, Khanal stressed that it is only through national consensus that Nepal’s present crisis could be diffused and pointed out the need that consensus should be built on past agreements to accomplish pending tasks of constitution writing.

Khanal also said the political parties’ failure to agree on the issue of federalism resulted in dissolution of CA. Reiterating that Nepal would continue sticking to the one China policy, Khanal expressed gratitude for China’s continued assistance to Nepal so far.

UML leaders KP Oli, Ishwor Pokharel, and Chinese ambassador to Nepal Yang Houlan, among others, were also present in the meeting. Ai arrived in Kathmandu on Friday on a three-day Nepal visit, leading a high-level Chinese delegation.

Ai is also scheduled to meet UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, CPN-Maoist Chairman Mohan Baidya, Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala later in the day. He will call on President Dr Ram Baran Yadav before wrapping up his visit on Sunday.
