KATHMANDU, Nov 16: With the world football governing body FIFA’s ban on Ganesh Thapa, president of the All Nepal Football Association, from all football-related activities on corruption charges, a serious question has been raised over his continuity as a lawmaker. Parliament officials say he should quit the position as lawmaker on moral grounds.

Thapa was last year appointed as lawmaker under the quota of 26 members who are nominated for their outstanding service for the nation in their respective field.

“A lawmaker can’t continue for the post when he is questioned on criminal charges and moral turpitude,” said a top official at the parliament secretariat requesting anonymity.

Parliament officials have refrained from making formal comments based on media reports. They, however, said that he can’t continue to hold the position on moral grounds because he was picked up as lawmaker on the basis of playing important role in his field but the world’s apex football body has charged him with evidences in the same sector.

“The latest development shows that he has betrayed the country instead,” said yet another official.

As per the existing laws, a lawmaker is suspended once a case is filed against him/her and he or she loses the post once the court convicts the member.
