KATHMANDU, Nov 26: Two days after President Dr Ram Baran Yadav issued a seven-day deadline for the parties to come up with a consensual prime ministerial candidate, CPN (Maoist) Chairman Mohan Baidya met UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and informed that his party has picked party general secretary Ram Bahadur Thapa as the party´s candidate for the prime minister´s post.

Leaders present at the meeting, however, refused to disclose how Dahal responded to Baidya´s proposal.[break]

The party, claiming to be the third alternative political force in the country, in the past had also proposed Thapa as the party´s prime ministerial candidate.

During his meeting with Dahal in Lazimpat on Sunday, Baidya claimed that Thapa alone can find a solution to the current political crisis.

"We have proposed Thapa as the prime ministerial candidate in the past as well. He is the only leader who is capable of finding a solution to the current crisis," CPN-Maoist Secretary Dev Gurung, who was also present at the meeting, told Republica, adding that Thapa would also get the support of nationalists and federalists.

Gurung claimed that only his party is clear on issues of national sovereignty and federalism. He said that the failure of the political parties to bring the new constitution had led to the current political crisis.

“We will continue our discussions with other parties on how we can end the current deadlock,” said Baidya.

According to CPN-Maoist leaders, since Thapa is a patriotic leader who has been fighting for the cause of people, his leadership will guarantee peace and the new constitution.

The CPN (Maoist) has proposed Thapa as the new prime minister as UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress and UML have failed to find a solution to the current deadlock.
