Tainted lawmaker Rana surrenders

KATHMANDU, Jan 8: Lawmaker Narad Muni Rana, who had been absconding after his alleged involvement in red passport misuse, has surrendered to the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) on Sunday.



Sources at CIAA said lawmaker Rana was sent to custody for further investigation as he presented himself to CIAA Sunday afternoon. A permanent resident of Kailali, Rana is a CPN-UML lawmaker elected under proportional representation. [break]



Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police had arrested Rana from his apartment in Anamnagar on July 4, 2011 over his alleged involvement in red passport misuse.



He had been absconding after his release by Kathmandu District Court on bail.



Police investigation has shown that one Nirmal Baniya of Myagdi flew via Etihad Airways to Australia using Rana´s passport, removing the original photograph.



The anti-graft body has accused Rana of selling his red passport for Rs 1 million.
