KATHMANDU, March 28: A powerful wind gust of 80 kilometers per hour affected normal life in the capital on Monday. Due to the severe weather condition, several commercial aircraft on domestic and international flights were diverted or forced to stay on hold in the sky for about half an hour.

At least six persons were injured, with some zink roofs blown away and trees knocked down. Vehicular movement was obstructed, commuters were forced to enter nearby shops or houses for shelter and the shops themselves were forced to shut early. Parents with school children were worried as the children were on their way home when the storm struck.According to meteorologists, a wind gust is a sudden, brief increase in the speed of wind.

"The weather development in the western hills brought about the strong wind gust," said Sameer Shrestha, senior meteorologist at the Metrological Forecasting Division (MFD). He informed that the storm lasted about 45 minutes and was followed by rain.

According to Shrestha, the powerful wind and rainfall has cleared the haze from the skies over the Valley. The haze is caused by pollution.

Meteorologist Shrestha said visibility over the Valley will be clear on Tuesday. Severe air pollution generated by motor vehicles, brick factories and industrial mills has hung over the Valley for the last several days.
