SPORTS BRIEFS: CAN beats NSJF in friendly

KATHMANDU, Jan 2: Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) registered a 29-run victory over Nepal Sports Journalist Forum (NSJF) in a friendly match held on Monday. Winning the toss, CAN opted to bat first and scored 183 runs losing eight wickets in the allocated 20 overs. Former national captain Raju Khadka scored 51 runs off just 19 balls, including four huge sixes and five boundaries, before retiring hurt.



Sunil Man Amatya scored an unbeaten 35 off 37 balls with four boundaries. Amatya too retired hurt. Maheshwar Shrestha and Kiran Rana scored 13 runs each for CAN. [break]



Durga Nath Subedi grabbed two wickets while Asim Subedi and Ritesh Rijal grabbed a wicket each for NSJF. In the run chase, NSJF did not have a good start as it lost the first wicket with 20 runs on board. Opening batsman Asim Subedi gave away his wicket after scoring a run-a-ball 11.



Ujjwal Acharya was also dismissed cheaply scoring 11 runs off 17 balls. Another opener Durga Nath Subedi and Nepali cricket coach Pubudu Dassanayake then gave some hope to NSJF with a 82-run partnership for the third wicket, but it was not enough for victory.



Subedi was out scoring 56 runs off 50 balls including seven boundaries, while Dassanayake remained unbeaten on 47 runs off 38 balls with four boundaries. National selector Bijay Sharma, CAN General Secretary Ashok Nath Pyakurel and Maheshwar Shrestha grabbed a wicket each for CAN. Raju Khadka adjudged the man-of-the-match for his outstanding half-century.



Tip Top, Naxal into semis



KATHMANDU
: Tip Top XI and Naxal Challengers on Monday booked their places in the semifinals of the Shree Riddhi Siddhi Marwadi Champions League. Tip Top XI beat Ebisu Real Hitters by seven wickets while Naxal Challengers defeated Belmonte Fighters by seven wickets. In the first match, Ebisu Real Hitters won the toss and scored 82 runs losing all the wickets in the match reduced by five overs.



Gopal Agrawal was the highest scorer with 31 runs off 36 balls. Required to reach a revised target of 52 runs in nine overs due to rain, Tip Top XI accomplished the task in just 5.4 overs losing three wickets. Manish Chaudhary scored 20 runs off 16 balls while Aashish Chaudhary was not out on 18 runs off eight balls. In the second quarterfinal, Belmonte Fighters batted first and scored 116 runs losing five wickets in 16 overs.



Mohammed Shahid Khan scored 45 runs off 30 balls. Parth Upadhyay grabbed two wickets for Naxal Challengers. With 57 runs from Prasanna Shakya, Naxal Challengers then reached the target in just 10.3 overs losing three wickets.



Saipal, Ideal in final



KATHMANDU
: Saipal Academy set up a final clash against the host Ideal in the senior boys´ category of the Second Ideal Inter School Basketball Tournament. Saipal defeated Neric 15-11 in the semifinal played on Monday.



Crystal Gurung scored nine points for the winning side. [break]



Meanwhile, Ideal beat Midland 16-10 as Ashish Tamang scored seven points. In junior boys´ section, Awareness International Academy (AIA) and Neric reached in the final. AIA edged past Reliance International Academy 25-23 while Neric pulled a 34-32 win over Ideal in the semifinal. Subash Sen scored 15 points for AIA while Indra Khadka contributed 13 points for Neric.


Chhantyal takes lead


KATHMANDU: Govinda Chhantyal of Nepal Chhantyal Association accumulated five points on Monday and took a lead in the individual event of the Second Gurung Bamboo Open Archery Tournament. Chhantyal received Rs 7000 for being the best archer on the first day of the tournament. Norbu Gurung of Manang Marshyangdi Archery Club, Tham Gurung of Thakali Kitchen and Deepak Chhantyal of Nepal Chhantyal Association shared the second position with three points each.



Wangel Ghale of Manang Marshyangdi accumulated two points in the tournament. The tournament is organized by Gurung Bamboo Archery Club on its premises at Sukedhara, Kathmandu.
