KATHMANDU, Jan 27: A corruption case worth nearly Rs 68 million has been filed against former senior engineer of Bharatpur Metropolitan City, Bharat Kumar Acharya, for allegedly amassing illegal assets and registering them in his wife’s name.
The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) lodged the case at the Special Court in Kathmandu on Tuesday, accusing Acharya of abusing his public office to accumulate unexplained wealth. The commission has set the claim amount at Rs 67.89 million and is seeking penalties, imprisonment, and confiscation of the illegally acquired assets. Acharya’s wife, Lili Subedi, has also been named as a co-defendant to facilitate asset recovery.

Acharya, an eighth-level officer in Bharatpur Metropolitan City. Following a complaint about irregular wealth accumulation, the CIAA, after examining his assets, filed the corruption case after finding his wealth exceeded his income.
The charge sheet states that the illegally acquired funds were used to purchase land, construct a house, buy vehicles, and maintain bank deposits in Subedi’s name. The commission has filed the case under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 2002, and the CIAA Act, 2017, seeking confiscation of the disputed assets.
