Amrit defeated his father Hira Bahadur 12-10, 7-11, 11-7, 11-9 in the final of men´s singles of the Shrestha Construction Cup Open Squash Championship at the Nepal Squash Academy on Saturday. [break]
Hira Bahadur Thapa had won men´s singles title in the every tournament he participated since 1994. This was the first title clash between the father and the son.
Hira Bahadur applauded son Amrit for his success. "He was good during the recent training sessions and he put up extra effort in the final," said Hira Bahadur Thapa. "He recently got a good exposure as he attended a tournament and training sessions in Chennai, India. I hope he will excel more in future if he gets more exposure," added the proud father. Hira Bahadur said that Amrit played trick shots to surprise him in the final.
Meanwhile, Amrit said that the recent training sessions he attended in Chennai helped him a lot to win the final against his father.
Amrit received Rs 11,000, while Hira got Rs 7,000. Prabin Singh Kanshakar and Sudeep Bahadur Singh claimed bronze medals in the men´s singles and bagged Rs 5,000 each.
Meanwhile, Hira´s daughter Krishna clinched the women´s singles title. She won all the matches of the round robin league to clinch gold medal.
She defeated Chhitij Gurung 11-7, 11-0, 11-0 in the last match of round robin league and acquired 15 points. Gurung finished in the second position with 12 points, while Nilima Malla claimed third position with nine points. Krishna Thapa received Rs 5,000, while Gurung got Rs 3,000.
Chhabi Lal Paija claimed the plate championship in men´s singles. Paija defeated Dilip Narshingh Adhikari 11-5, 12-14, 12-10, 11-9 in the plate final.
Film artist Madan Krishna Shrestha handed over the awards to the winners. Altogether 26 male and six female players had participated in the tournament organized by Nepal Squash and Rackets Association to mark the World Squash Day.
