Series of robberies mark quake aftermath

CHITWAN, May 29: A series of thefts and robberies have been carried out in various villages over the past few weeks, taking advantage of the vulnerabilities of local people in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake of April 25. The situation reached a new low with the gunshot incident on Wednesday morning that has further traumatized the locals. Rajan Khadka of Yagyapuri, Bharatpur was seriously injured in the shooting.

The entire settlement at Yagyapuri is now living in fear of criminal gangs that have started entruding into people's houses, rendering them unconscious and then making off with their jewelry and cash. While the locals ramain awake the whole night, the gangsters have attacked youths patrolling the village.Jagannath Sapkota and his family at Kalyanpur, Bharatpur Sub-metropolis did not bolt their doors at night on 17th May, fearing quake aftershocks. They thought it would be easier for them to run outside if they left the doors open. A group of thieves then entered the house and made all the family members unconscious before taking away whatever they had.

In another recent incident, Rajan Khadka of Nainadevi was shot while he was investigation whether thieves had entered at the backside of his house. The unidentified group shot him in the upper chest, leaving him bleeding. He was rushed to a local hospital and is now undergoing treatment at Chitwan Medical College.

The locals have organized a sit-in protest following a series of such incidents, demanding security in their villages. A large number of security personnel has now been deployed in the Lanku area where the locals feel terrified.

The district police office said that such criminal groups have been active taking advantage of the people's suffering, and also thinking that the police are preoccupied with salvage operations.
