Seeking the pot of gold

KATHMANDU, July 25: The land of opportunities, the land where everything seems brighter and better, and the land with the Midas touch: our country is definitely not that land if the number of youth willing to jump on the next plane out of here is any indication. Besieged as we are with load shedding, troublesome strikes, and employment problems, the phrase “anywhere but here” feels apt.

Sakin Maharjan, 17, a class 12 student of Little Angels’ School, says, “It’s true that most of the youth are willing to settle abroad and not come back to Nepal. The reasons start with the very few job opportunities, the unstable political situation and lack of investors to invest money in different fields. Our country has resources but no one to utilize them and thus we face problems. Abroad, there are more possibilities of earning plenty of money, the facilities for education and infrastructure are also really good, making us feel more at ease there than in our own country.”[break]

Himal Panthi adds his opinion, “There’s always plenty of room at the top unlike in Nepal where there is lack of opportunities that suit the ability and skill of a person. The political chaos has also wreaked havoc with the dreams and ambitions of today’s youth. There is more genuine satisfaction in life and more obtained from life abroad than here. Our country is in a pitiable state where the fate of the poor is to remain poor and the rich become richer. Hence, the youth are flying abroad to settle there and, as a matter of fact, it is gaining ground too! For what reason should they come back?”

Creating better employment opportunities as well as creating a safer and more convenient life for its youth are what our leaders should be concentrating on. Though a life outside seems more glorious, wouldn’t we prefer to stay home if the conditions were better?

In our Facebook Page, going by the name of Aloo Manche, the person says, “People should really not worry about nationalism. They should live there where their ability and skills can contribute to humanity.”

Anish Manandhar impassions, “Our habit of seeking happiness before struggle, our habit of remaining silent, our habit of not accepting the change and our habit of blaming others are not only causing the migration of the youth but are also the reasons behind all the political, economical and the problems of social instability which is making our country backward in the world. I blame myself, I blame you. Let’s start changing ourselves individually and see how productive each individual can be for the country. Then I bet no one would want to go abroad.”

Probably a bit idealistic but definitely food for thought.
