Rs 97.1m Indian assistance

KATHMANDU, July 4: India on Wednesday provided Rs 97.1 million to Nepal for the construction of embankments along the Lalbakeya, Bagmati and Kamala rivers.



Indian Ambassador Jayant Prasad handed over a check to Minister for Irrigation Mahendra Yadav amidst a function in Kathmandu on Wednesday, said a statement from the Indian Embassy. [break]



The project is being undertaken as per the decision of the sixth meeting of Nepal-India Joint Committee on Inundation and Flood Management.



India has been providing assistance to Nepal for strengthening and extension of embankments along Lalbakeya, Bagmati and Kamla rivers.



With the present assistance, the total grant assistance already disbursed for the embankment construction along these rivers has reached Rs 2466.79 million.



Separately, India has committed a grant assistance of NRs 181.37 million for flood protection works along Trijuga, Lakhandei, Sunsari, Kankai and Kaligandaki rivers and 95.2 million along Gagan River, the embassy said.
