SINDHULI, Dec 17: Due to the sheer negligence of the concerned officials, the District Development Committee (DDC), Sindhuli was compelled to destroy rotten rice and other foodstuffs worth hundreds of thousands of rupees sent for the earthquake victims of the district. The DDC has burnt over 200 sacks of rice, which were supposed to be distributed to the quake-hit families, after they started rotting due to prolonged storage.

Staff at the Sindhuli DDC have brunt the rice and foodstuffs, sent by several donor agencies and the government, which were stored in warehouse for long period. The District Disaster Management Committee (DDMC) had stored over 200 sacks of rice for emergency situation at the district's assembly hall, which were not distributed to the quake victims for over nine months. The DDC source claimed that the rotten rice grains were destroyed after they started stinking. Due to the rice stored at the assembly hall, the DDC had not been able to operate the assembly hall.

"No one in the village has been deprived of food," claimed Local Development Officer (LDO) Shiva Prasad Humagain, adding that the people of the district did not come to ask for the foodstuffs on time.

"No one has any interest to burn rice," LDO Humagain told Republica, adding, that the rice grains had rotten after being stored in cold floor for a long period.

"The foodstuffs started smelling foul and were even unfit for the pigs. So we destroyed them," claimed Humagain.

Kajiman thing, a local complained that the DDC did not show any concern over the plights of the quake victims of the district, who are still struggling to survive. Even the relief materials sent at various VDCs of the district are still stored in godowns.

Sources claimed that the VDCs too are preparing to destroy the relief materials.

The devastating earthquakes of April and May had affected 25 VDCs and a municipality of Sindhuli in which over 41,000 houses were destroyed.

"We had directed the concerned agencies to distribute the foodstuffs on time," Acting Chief District Officer (CDO) Basu Prasad Kafle, said,

"Few items were stored for distribution at time of crisis and we have ordered to distribute them at once."
