KATHMANDU, Dec 23: Parliamentary Development Committee on Wednesday directed the government to give top priority to promotion of electric vehicles while formulating any plans and policies on transportation.

Stating that the country has its own fuel resources, a meeting of the committee held at Singha Durbar on Wednesday directed the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transportation (MoPIT) to give top priority to the promotion of electric vehicles and formulate polices to decrease import of diesel/petrol vehicles.

The committee held a meeting with Minister of Physical Infrastructure and Transportation Bijay Kumar Gachchhadar and other concerned stakeholders to discuss promotion of environment-friendly electric vehicles and management of public transportation.

The meeting directed MoPIT and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment to immediately form a coordination committee and start preparing strategic plan for the adoption of electrical modes of transportation as it is the need of the hour.

Lawmakers present in the meeting also stressed on adopting polices on encouraging electric modes of transportation as such measures would also help to drastically reduce air pollution in the cities like Kathmandu.

Chairman of the committee Rabindra Adhikari said that as effective management of public transportation is also an important indicator of human development index, the government must bring positive reforms in its transportation sector.

Similarly, the committee said that it was seriously concerned toward MoPIT's lack of proper preparations to effectively implement Smart Driving License Card System. “We found that much remains to be done by the concerned authorities to implement the system in a full-fledged manner,” said Adhikari.

The MoPIT started distributing smart driving license from December 6. Despite taking long time to launch the system, the ministry launched the driving license system only in Bagmati Zone although it was a nationwide project.

The ministry states that the system will be effective across the country within five years.

Likewise, the committee also directed the ministry to adopt scientific management system to manage public transportation in the capital and other major cities.
