Prez Yadav visits Bir Hospital, Durbar High School

KATHMANDU, June 1: President Dr Ram Baran Yadav visited Bir hospital in the capital Monday morning and acquired first hand information about the damage that the oldest hospital of the country suffered in the recent devastating quake.

On the occasion, President Yadav visited the nursing, hostel blocks as well as the out-patient and in-patient departments in the hospital.


Vice-chancellor at the National Academy of Medical Sciences, Bir Hospital Dr Ganesh Gurung apprised the President of the loss and damaged incurred by the hospital in the April 25 quake and subsequent aftershocks.

On the occasion, President Yadav urged concerned bodies to reconstruct the damaged buildings to resume services to continue the long and glorious history of the hospital in the country.

Hostel and canteen buildings of the college were damaged due to the quake while OPD building suffered partial damage.

Similarly, Intensive care unit, cancer treatment unit, gynecological unit also suffered serious cracks. As a result, the hospital is presently running its services from the adjoining national trauma centre, VC Gurung added.

The hospital was established in 1998 BS. About 1,200 doctors and other officials are in service in the hospital.

Director at the Hospital Dr Swayam Prakash Pundit shared that they were planning to construct 15-storey building for running 1,000-bed hospital after demolishing the nursing college and hostel buildings, but the plan was affected by the quake.

Pundit added that they would now construct only six-storey building.

Likewise, President Yadav inspected the first school of Nepal, the Durbar High School today.

The April 25 quake caused extensive damage to the physical structure of the 124-year-old school. Hence, it was labeled with the 'Red' sticker, denoting it unsafe, by the team of experts after an inspection carried out recently.

The School has been running its classes in a makeshift temporary shelter in its vicinity,

During today's inspection, the President took stock about the damages caused by the quake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale.

President Yadav told the School authorities that he will soon issue a directive to the concerned Ministry for the reconstruction of the school carrying the legacy of educational history of Nepal, shared Hemchandra Mahato, Principal of the School.

Currently, 225 students are studying in the Durbar High School, formally known as Bhanu Secondary School.

The Nepal Sanskrit Secondary School in its premises has 150 students enrolled in the current academic session, according Principal Mahato. RSS
