KATHMANDU, April 8: The Parliamentary Committee on Social Justice and Human Rights on Friday met Ganga Maya Adhikari, who has been staging hunger strike for the past 22 months demanding action against murderers of her younger son Krishna Prasad, at the Bir Hospital and took stock of her condition.

A group of parliamentarians led by the committee chairman Sushil Kumar Shrestha reached the hospital on Friday afternoon and discussed about the demands of Adhikari family while hospital director Dr Swayam Prakash Pandit briefed the lawmakers on Adhikari's health."She has been staging the protest since long for justice. The committee will discuss the issue with the government in the near future," said Chairman Shrestha after meeting Ganga Maya.

"A person has been seeking justice and staging protest for a long time but the state is unable to address it properly. It is a situation of statelessness and the parliamentary committee has taken it seriously," he added.

During the meeting, Ganga Maya had urged the House committee to help her in her battle for justice.

"My son's murderers are roaming freely. I have seen eight prime ministers come and go after I and my husband started our battle for justice. I don't want the incumbent PM KP Sharma Oli to visit me at the hospital but I want the murders behind bars," said Ganga Maya to the lawmakers.

Ganga Maya's husband Nanda Prasad died last year while staging a fast-unto-death for 329 days, demanding punishment for their son's murderers.

Maoist cadres had allegedly murdered their son Krishna Prasad at Bakulahar Chowk of Ratnanagar, Chitwan in June 2004, accusing him of being a police informant. Following the murder, Nanda Prasad and his wife Ganga Maya had started a struggle for justice. Nanda Prasad had registered complaints against three of the accused on June 7, 2004, and Krishna's brother Noor Prasad had filed another complaint against 11 others.

After the Adhikaris' long battle and fast-unto-death, the government had filed a case against 13 persons at the District Court, Chitwan on April 13, 2014.

However, the district court released all the accused on bail on April 17, 2014. The appellate court on June 18, 2015 upheld the district court order. Ganga Maya had then moved the Supreme Court, which recently had ordered to take Chhabi Lal Paudel, one of the accused murderers, into judicial custody.

The district court is yet to give its final verdict regarding the murder case and Ganga Maya has also continued her hunger strike.

According to Dr Pandit, Ganga Maya has been taking only liquid foods since the previous government assured her that her demands will be met.

"Her health condition is stable now but she is suffering from deep vein thrombosis," said Dr Pandit.
