KATHMANDU, March 4: Number of voice telephony subscribers reached 28.98 million by November 17, up from 28.80 million on October 18, the latest MIS report of Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) shows.

The population of the country, according to the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), is 26.50 million. This means voice telephony subscriber has surpassed country's population.

Nepal's mobile voice subscriber base amounted to 27.29 million by November 17, up from 27.1 million in mid-October, according to the report. "Of them, there were 25.96 million GSM users in November, up from 25.80 million in October. Similarly remaining 1.32 million use Nepal Telecom's CDMA service."

Nepal Telecom led the country's voice telephony services market in November, with a total of 13.68 million subscribers, followed by Ncell with 13 million. Nepal Telecom had 11.56 million GSM subscribers and 1.32 million CDMA customers by November 17. "Nepal has mobile teledensity of 103.01 percent as of mid-November, while fixed teledensity reached 3.20 percent," the data revealed.

The 100 percent mobile teledensity is also due to multiple mobile phones carried by a single person.

Since the liberal market opened the telecom sector for the private players and Nepal Telecom has been transformed into a public company, the customers and government both have been reaping the benefit. The government is getting more revenue, whereas customers have a choice in telecom service. Currently, Nepal Telecom and Ncell are the market leaders, though there are some more telecom service providers in the country.
