Malaysia suspends int'l recruitment for indefinite period

KATHMANDU, Feb 19: Malaysia has suspended recruitment of foreign workers from all source countries including Nepal, The Malaysian Insider reported quoting Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The decision comes a day after Malaysia signed an agreement with Bangladesh, the website further said.Zahid, who is also the home minister, encouraged employers to hire locals rather go for international recruitment of foreign labors, the website further stated.

"Those existing foreign workers, especially whose working permits have expired or are without proper document, they are not allowed to work in Malaysia," the website quoted Zahid as saying.

Malaysia is one of the most lucrative destinations for Nepali workers working in manufacturing, farming and service sectors.

Around 700,000 Nepalis are currently working in Malaysia. The country hires around 200,000 Nepali workers every year.
