“Anything can happen in this city,” reads the tag of the film; and according to its director Akash Adhikari, the story tells the tale of a city that’s growing in leaps and bounds, leaving its negative impacts on its denizens.[break]
“The sociological and cultural facets of Kathmandu are under tremendous pressures, and the deteriorating conditions are directly affecting the norms and values of family life,” shared Adhikari, who also stars in the movie as the protagonist Aryan.
Generation gap is also an issue that’s wreaking havoc in the family life, he believes. According to him, the movie carries a subject that’s universal and should sit well with international audience as well.
“During our exclusive premiere held in Oakland, California, there were in the audience viewers of Spanish and Indian origins who came up to me and expressed their liking for the movie,” added Adhikari.

In the movie, Aryan returns from the US to do something substantial in his homeland. But upon his arrival, he’s dismayed by the conditions of the nation and the superficiality that has trickled into the family, and the crisis that threatens to tear his family.
“The subject of the story is what drew me to the movie. It’s relevant in our context and is about time someone told it. I don’t have any regrets investing time and money in the project,” revealed Ben Nabin Adhikari, co-producer of the movie.
Starring veteran actors Gauri Malla, Arjun Shrestha and newcomers Prapti Ghimire from Germany, Astha, Resh Marattha, Samyukta RL Rana, the movie also stars American actress Ria Murphy. Singer Ani Choying Dolma and famed Bollywood singer Sukhwinder Singh can also be seen in special cameo appearance.
About donning multiple hats in the movie, Akash Adhikari revealed that although he has helmed a dozen movies in the past as director, he wasn’t completely satisfied with the projects coming his way.
A work of nearly three years, Kathmandu gave him a channel to vent out his frustration regarding the socio-political scenarios of the country and also do a project that he could relate to, without any compromises.
Releasing in various theaters in Kathmandu on February 3, the director informed that this is also the first time a Nepali film has been shot with RED 4K Camera in various picturesque locations in Kathmandu and San Francisco.
